That nonhuman mammals have social values is obvious; they care for juveniles, and sometimes mates, kin, and affiliates; they cooper- ate, they may punish, and they reconcile after conflict.26 We could engage in a semantic wrangle about whether these values are really moral values, but a wrangle about words is apt to be unrewarding.
